Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
