Federal authorities have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
